Lacquered Boxes
Hand-painted lacquered boxes from Russia's celebrated miniature-painting villages. Each region has its own signature style: Palekh (Палех), with its jewel-like figures glowing against black; Fedoskino (Федоскино), the oldest school, known for lustrous realism and mother-of-pearl underlays; Mstiora (Мстёра), with its soft, luminous landscapes; and Kholui (Холуй), bold and richly coloured. Every box is painted by hand over papier-mâché, then sealed under layer upon layer of lacquer - a small treasure to keep or give.
