Palekh Lacquer Box - Along the Street
A hand-painted Palekh (Палех) lacquer box illustrating the old Russian folk song Vdol po ulitse — "Along the Street". A dashing young rider in a red hussar-style jacket and plumed hat reins in his golden horse to greet a village beauty carrying water on a yoke, her orange sarafan and long fair plait catching the sun. Log izbas and turquoise trees line the lane behind them, and a red sun blazes in a black sky — the village courtship scene the song describes, painted with a smile.
Painted in the traditional Palekh manner: egg-tempera miniature on black-lacquered papier-mâché, with gold-leaf highlights and a hand-drawn gold filigree border. Lettered in gold along the bottom edge: "Палех", the title "Вдоль по улице", and the artist's initials Г.Н. (G.N.).
Folk-song scenes like this are a Palekh favourite — everyday village life given the same jewelled treatment as the fairy tales. A lovely gift for anyone with Russian roots or a love of folk music, or a keepsake box for a dressing table.
