A hand-painted Palekh (Палех) lacquer box telling one of Russia's best-loved fairy tales. Ivan Tsarevich gallops across the lid on a golden horse, the captured Firebird blazing in its cage beside him, while Elena the Beautiful rides the Grey Wolf at his side. Behind them rise the onion domes of a fairytale kingdom, and the wolf's flight is traced in swirling blue scrolls of wind — a signature Palekh touch.
Painted in the traditional Palekh manner: egg-tempera miniature on black-lacquered papier-mâché, with gold-leaf highlights and a hand-drawn gold filigree border. The title of the tale, "Иван Царевич … Волк", is lettered in gold along the bottom of the scene, with the artist's initials К.Н. (K.N.) beside it.
Ivan and the Grey Wolf is the story of a prince sent to catch the Firebird, who is helped — and repeatedly rescued — by a wise talking wolf, and ends up winning the princess, the golden horse and the Firebird all at once. A perfect gift for anyone who loves Russian folklore, or a jewel-like keepsake box for a dressing table.
