Paweł Althamer – Polish Artist & Figure/Puppet Maker
Discover a unique piece by renowned Polish contemporary artist Paweł Althamer (b. 1967, Warsaw), crafted during his early experimental years in the 1990s. Althamer began his artistic journey at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts (1988–93) and went on to receive international acclaim, including the Vincent Award (2004) and participation in events like Documenta, Manifesta, and the Venice Biennale .
During the 1990s, just out of University, Althamer created a range of handmade dolls and other larger pieces, when Poland was going through an opening up the West, many of which were sold in local galleries and craft shops—these early works reflect his interest in sculpture, play, and community engagement . Just like his later public installations and collective artworks, these life size pieces embody his hands-on, honest approach to art.
