A farm girl in a red sarafan sits at the edge of her painted yard with a tub of grain. Four speckled hens crowd around her, waiting to be fed. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight underneath sways, the strings tug, and the hens peck at the grain one after another in a steady rhythm.

This is one of Russia’s oldest moving toys, from the carving tradition of Bogorodskoye village near Moscow, where craftsmen have made pecking hens for well over a century. Each piece is hand-cut from soft limewood, then painted by hand with red berries, blue grapes and green leaves.

It makes a cheerful gift for children, a talking point on a shelf, and a lovely piece of folk art for collectors
