Bagarodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Red & Black Berries
A girl in a polka-dot headscarf and a sunny yellow sarafan stands at the edge of a bright red yard, holding a tub of grain. Her four scarlet hens have bold black-and-white tails and are spotted like ladybirds, with green leaves painted along their sides. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and the hens dip their beaks one after another.
This is the boldest of our pecking hens: classic Khokhloma red and black, with clusters of blackcurrants, green leaves and little touches of gold across the board. Each one is carved from limewood and painted by hand.
Moving toys like this come from the Bogorodskoye tradition near Moscow, where pecking hens have been made for well over a century. It’s a striking gift for a child, and a graphic, cheerful piece for a folk-art shelf.
